The Best Electric Food Chopper

Published on August 30, 2023

After testing 8 electric choppers, we’ve concluded that the Moulinex DJ520110 offers an excellent compromise between small price, practicality and efficiency. And if you’re looking for a slightly larger solution that chops even faster while not taking color from food, it’s the Moulinex DPA141 that we recommend.

This comparison is certified 100% impartial and follows our selection process.

This 400 ml chopper is ideal for 2 or 3 people. Very instinctive to use, it was the most practical of all those we tested. The various elements fell easily into place.

In terms of efficiency, its 300 W of power combined with its 4 blades enabled us to chop 2 carrots into small 2-3 mm thick pieces in just 3 seconds. We also chopped the peppers and herbs very well. We noted that you didn’t need much food in the bowl for it to work well.

Unfortunately, the plastic bowl quickly stained when using the more pigmented foods. And cleaning (very simple by hand or in the dishwasher for removable parts) didn’t restore the original color.

Best mid-range

Moulinex la moulinette DPA141

With its 1000 W, this model is the most powerful, which has a positive impact on its chopping speed despite the fact that it only has 2 blades. Its useful 500 ml bowl resists staining.

Moulinex la moulinette DPA141

Contrary to the previous model, the plastic bowl of this chopper stood up well to staining during our tests. We were able to chop carrots and peppers without the bowl’s useful 500 ml capacity ending up with an orange or red tint.

Thanks to its 1000 W of power and 2 blades, chopping the 2 carrots took just 2 seconds. We even found that the bell pepper was chopped better than with other models. Of course, the herbs were quickly turned into small pieces. However, we did notice that this electric chopper sent food much more in all directions (on the lid too).

Finally, the plastic bowl is dishwasher-safe. The other components were very easy to clean by hand, but drying is more of a pain, as with all the choppers we tested.

Cheap alternative

Russell Hobbs 24662-56

This is the only chopper in our selection with a glass bowl and it resists staining perfectly. It offers a capacity of 500 ml and is effective for chopping various types of food.

Russell Hobbs 24662-56

This electric chopper has a thick 1 L glass bowl that can accommodate 500 ml of food. Of course, this material has the advantage of not staining with more pigmented foods.

If we placed it as an alternative, it’s because its 2 blades and lower power of just 200 W were a little slower to get through the tasks we gave it. In fact, it took 5 seconds to achieve the same result as chopping 2 carrots with the other models (compared with 3 and 2 seconds for the previous models). We achieved good results with peppers and herbs, provided we put enough of them in the bowl.

Finally, the removable elements are dishwasher-safe, but they’re also very easy to clean by hand. Only drying is, as usual, less straightforward.

How did we test?

To test the electric choppers, we began by observing their design, noting the presence of accessories, the number of blades and the materials used.

Next, we chopped various foods to check the performance of each model. We timed how long it took them to chop 2 carrots (harder, juice-free foods) into small 2-3 mm pieces. Then we proceeded with peppers and herbs to see how the choppers fared with softer, juicier or fibrous foods. Following this, we also checked whether the bowls, blades or structures took on the color of the food or not.

Finally, we judged the drudgery of their cleaning. Fortunately, a soapy sponge was generally sufficient to wash the various elements (blades, bowl, lid). However, drying was considerably more painful due to the multiple nooks and crannies in the bowls and lids, for all the choppers tested.

How to choose your electric chopper

To help you with your choice, we’ve listed the criteria you should consider before making your purchase:

Electric chopper

  • The power: this has an impact on the texture of the food you’ll be able to chop. Indeed, the less powerful ones are generally not recommended for harder foods such as nuts or raw carrots, for example. However, our tests have shown that higher power doesn’t necessarily mean better performance.
  • Materials: plastic is often used for the lid and structure of the appliance. The bowl is sometimes made of glass, which is healthier. We recommend stainless steel blades for greater efficiency and longer life.

Electric chopper

  • The volume: it depends above all on how you’re going to use your chopper. If you only want to chop herbs, a small 250 ml bowl is more than enough. On the other hand, if you mainly want to use it to chop your vegetables in order to cook for a whole family, we’d advise you to go for a volume of at least 400 ml.

Electric chopper

  • Ease of maintenance: blades and accessories must be easy to exchange and clean. So opt for a device that is easy to clean, with dishwasher-safe accessories if possible.
  • Accessories: some models also include accessories such as a dishwasher, a lid for storing the bowl in the fridge or an emulsifying disk for preparing sauces. The most advanced models are actually multi-function food processors and may even include a blender.

Other electric mincers we recommend

Kenwood Easy Chop CHP61.100WH (€39.65 at time of publication): A 2-speed, 4-blade chopper. With its useful 500 ml bowl capacity, this electric chopper is practical in a small family of up to 3 or 4 people. During our tests, its 4 stainless-steel blades, 500 W and 2 speeds quickly got through 2 carrots (4 seconds). It also chopped peppers and herbs, but quickly threw them against the bowl wall. We therefore recommend using it to chop good quantities rather than very small ones, for best results. We liked its non-slip base and found it very efficient. Dishwasher-safe, it’s also easy to clean by hand (although drying is a bit of a chore). Nevertheless, the plastic bowl remained stained after using the carrots and bell pepper. Finally, the brand includes a dishwasher and mayonnaise attachment in the box.

Bosch MMR08A1 (€47.46 at time of publication): An efficient model, but a little less practical. In our tests, this Bosch model took just 3 seconds to chop 2 carrots into small 2-3 mm thick pieces. Chopping peppers and herbs was also quick, but the food was pushed farther to the edges of the 800 ml plastic bowl. This is made possible by its 2 blades combined with its 400 W of power. On the other hand, we found it less practical than the others, as its lid didn’t snap easily into place. What’s more, the white lid immediately took on the color of the food when it came into contact with it. Fortunately, the whole unit is easy enough to clean. However, like the other models, drying is a real pain. Finally, note that some parts are dishwasher-safe.

Other electric choppers tested

Moulinex DJ300110 (€34.99 at time of publication): In addition to not resisting well to the staining associated with highly pigmented foods, this electric chopper of only 250 ml appeared to us to have a somewhat lower quality than the other models in this test.

Moulinex AT714G32 (€44.99 at time of publication): Although fast thanks to its 500 W power, we preferred to leave this model out of our selection, as its lowest blade doesn’t really go to the bottom of the bowl, which left food unchopped.

Kenwood FDP301WH (€71.31 at time of publication):Despite its higher price, this model didn’t stand up to food staining. In addition, it was not effective with small quantities to be chopped, pushing them towards the walls, and was the slowest to achieve an equivalent result with carrots (over 10 seconds).
