Etekcity 679113381254

Made of stainless steel, with high-precision sensors, the Etekcity 679113381254 scale shone during our tests. In addition to being highly accurate (down to the gram), its special feature is the removable bowl with a capacity of 2.15 L (with an overload indicator). This feature makes the scale practical to use, as the contents can be put into it comfortably. However, it has an imposing size. We would also like to point out its backlit and well-made LCD, on which the data is very easy to read. Overall, we recommend it for its reasonable price and versatility.

Best budget

Eono ‎KS02-White

Like most of its rivals, the Eono scale can weigh up to 11 lbs and has, of course, a tare function. Having tested it, we think it is a very good choice if you are looking for a basic, compact, and easy-to-use model. We liked the different units of measurement available (g, ml, lb, oz). It was also one of the quickest to turn on. Before the test, we were more sceptical about its touch buttons, which we thought were not very recommendable for use in the kitchen. However, these worked well even with wet hands. Finally, please note that it is available in other colors.

Best high-end

MyWeigh KD7000

With a maximum capacity of 15,4 lbs (7 kg), it is ideal if you bake or want to weigh large quantities. The operation is simple and the display makes it easy to read the data displayed.

MyWeigh KD7000

Based on our tests, we think the MyWeigh is an excellent choice. It can weigh up to 15.4 lbs (7 kg), with an accuracy of one gram, has an adjustable backlit LCD display, and a large, easy-to-clean stainless steel platform. With this model, of course, you can use the tare option to deduct the weight of your bowls. Battery operated or mains plugged in. This is a high-end model that we consider more suitable for regular, rather than occasional use.

Budget alternative

AccuWeight 201

Despite its relatively simple design and attractive price, the AccuWeight scale makes no compromises when it comes to functionality. It offers features worthy of more expensive models.

AccuWeight 201

During our tests, we found that the AccuWeight works well despite its low price. Unlike the Eono, it has physical buttons. Although it is a budget model, it has nothing to envy to high-end models: tare function, backlight, automatic shut-off, numerous units of measurement (pounds, ounces, grams, ounces of flour, milliliters)…. It is also very compact and can be easily stored in a drawer. All these essential features make the AccuWeight a scale that can fit into any kitchen. Its only flaw? It switches off automatically after one minute of activity, which could be a bit annoying while preparing a recipe.

Mid-range alternative

Salter 1035SSBKDR

Equipped with all the functions you would expect from a kitchen scale (tare, different units of measurement…), this model is distinguished by its compact size, practical for small kitchens.

Salter 1035SSBKDR

What we discovered in our tests with the Salter scale were its simplicity (it only has two buttons) and its efficiency. With its small size, it fits easily into any kitchen drawer, while offering essential functions. It provides the classic units of measurement: milliliters, grams, ounces, and ounces of flour. Like most scales on the market in this price range, it has a maximum weight limit of 5 kg. It provides accurate weighing and turns off automatically after 2 minutes of inactivity. We recommend it if you want a more compact scale than the Etekcity in our selection.

How to choose a kitchen scale?

A scale is an important tool in the preparation of food (and even more so in pastry-making), so it has to be accurate. However, the choice is not the easiest one if you consider the many models available on the market. There are a few key points to bear in mind when making a purchase.

There are several types of kitchen scales available today:

  • Mechanical scales: these are the most recognisable of all, with their tray or bowl, graduated dial and pointer. They do not need a power supply and are quite accurate, but over time the mechanism can lose its precision, especially for small quantities.
  • Electronic scales: very common, they are usually more compact and accurate than mechanical scales (especially for very small quantities). They usually have an LCD display, on which measurements can be easily read, as well as a “tare” function, which resets the counter to zero between weighings. However, they require batteries or a power supply to operate, and the maximum weight is usually limited to 5 kg.

  • Professional scales: these can often be used to weigh quite heavy foods very accurately and can be equipped with two screens, which can be useful for butchers, cheesemongers, or greengrocers.
  • Connected scales: these can be used via an application that provides the nutritional values of the food weighed. They are therefore suitable for people who are careful about their figures.

Knowing this, consider these criteria to choose the model that best suits your requirements:

  • Ergonomics: a good kitchen scale will make your life easier with features such as a large weighing area and a big weighing capacity. Preferably, opt for a device that comes with a tare function so that you can weigh your ingredients in the containers without the hassle of doing tedious calculations.

  • Design: it may seem trivial, but it can make the difference between one scale and another. Look for one with a large display and check the dimensions to make sure it fits your needs and your kitchen. Some high-end models have a removable platform and a sliding display so you can read the measurements.
  • Units of measurement: scales can display the weight of ingredients in kilograms, ounces, pounds, centiliters, and millilitres. You will need to determine which units of measurement you will need most and choose your scale accordingly. If you plan to weigh liquids, a model that displays ml will be very helpful.

How did we test?

Accuracy is a decisive factor in the purchase of a scale. That is why we started by checking this point for each of them. To do this, we used a pine cone, as well as water and sugar in different quantities. We also took the opportunity to test the tare function present in all the scales and their ability to change the unit of measurement.

We then analysed the responsiveness of the scales, the time it took to switch on, switch off and give the weighing results. Finally, we checked their practicality (especially when they were tactile) and their ergonomics.

Other kitchen scales tested

Tefal Optiss BC5001V1 (£19.99 upon publication): not very practical. Despite its promising features, the Tefal did not stand out during our tests. It turns on tactilely by placing your hand on its tray for several seconds, which is not easy to do in everyday cooking. We also criticised its lack of precision as it only gives measurements in cl and not in ml.

Terraillon Carré Inox (£30.17 upon publication): does not justify its price. During our tests, we were very disappointed with the Terraillon, which, for a high-end scale, offers nothing to distinguish it from the more affordable models. For example, it has a similar maximum weight to the others, 5 kg.
