The Basilisk V3 is, in our opinion, the best compromise of the moment. It has all the advantages you would expect from a mouse of this type, with an excellent optical sensor and ergonomics that are suitable for all body types. Of course, the materials and the quality of the finish are on the same level as the other products of the brand. A discreet touch of RGB, placed at its base, highlights the whole and brings the small detail that was missing in its sober style. Its little flaws are the slightly above average weight (101g) and the sniper button which is a little short, making it difficult for smaller hands to reach.

Best budget

Razer DeathAdder V2

This mid-range model reference benefits from a price reduction, which places it directly at the top of the list of affordable mouses. It stands out thanks to its apparent simplicity and great performance.

The DeathAdder V2 is a very simple mouse: the only fancy features are the scroll wheel and the logo backlit in RGB. This simplicity conceals a very competent mouse with ergonomics suitable for all hand sizes, an effective grip on the sides and sufficient space for even the largest of hands. The feel of the individual buttons is also convincing. The 8 buttons are fully programmable via the Synapse software.

Best high-end

Razer Naga Pro

Jewel of the brand, it sets the competition aside thanks to its versatility. Its modularity allows you to adapt it to any type of game, whatever your needs are.

Razer has put a real emphasis on ergonomics with this model: it has a design that favors a good grip no matter how you hold your mouse. Its features make it a durable, accurate and responsive 5G wired mouse with optical sensor. The Pro version also benefits from a top-notch wireless connection and relies on the excellent Synapse software.

Budget alternative

SteelSeries Rival 3

We recommend this mouse to right-handed users who want performance at a lower cost. On paper, this model is well below high-end competitors, but it is still excellent.

Despite its reasonable price, this right-handed mouse offers a solid performance. During our tests, we could play any shooting game without any problems and have a pleasant mouse glide, which is beneficial to overall responsiveness. It has six configurable buttons, good sturdiness and a controlled weight (77g). We therefore consider it to be an ideal starter, even if its competitor is even better.

Mid-range alternative

This mouse is the lightest and glides extremely well, which results in an undeniable gaming experience. Moreover, it has a very original look and you can save up to 4 player profiles.

Honorable mentions

Logitech G203 Lightsync (£19,99 upon publication): a good basic model. Its compact size makes it particularly accessible to the smallest of hands in both palm and claw grip. Its low price does not prevent it from having an excellent optical sensor whose sensitivity and precision will suit most gamers. Unfortunately, its sober and neat design hides a perfectible ergonomics.

Cooler Master MM720 (£29,99 upon publication): an atypical shape. The MM720 is a mouse that is convincingly light and comfortable to use. Indeed, it has an unusual shape with a finger rest on the right-hand side to support your entire hand, no matter how you hold it. There is also an adhesive grip if you need it. However, the software is not perfect and the sampling rate is limited to 1000 Hz.

Logitech G502 Hero (£38,99 upon publication): an old reference model that is still convincing. If you’re looking for a versatile, right-handed gaming mouse with a great design and grip, all at a standard price, the Logitech G502 is a great value. Its many programming options should satisfy all gamer profiles. Even though it was released in 2015, it is still very much up to date and competitive in terms of its price-quality ratio. A wireless version, the Lightspeed, is even more efficient but for a much higher budget.

How to choose your gaming mouse?

The choice of a gaming mouse can have a big influence on your gaming performance. You should consider your skill level and gamer profile to make the best possible purchase.

The number of models on the market makes this decision difficult. Therefore, we have compiled a list of criteria to help you:

  • Shape: this will influence your grip. Some will favor a palm grip, others a claw grip. Large models are not suitable for small hands and vice versa. With this in mind, it is also necessary to check whether the mouse is right-handed, left-handed or ambidextrous.
  • Connectivity: wired mouses work via USB. Their advantage is that you don’t have to worry about the battery level. The second type of mouse generally works via Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi. Their advantage is that you don’t have to worry about getting your hand caught in the wires while you play. Wired mouses are often preferred by gamers because they have less latency and are generally lighter.

  • Type of sensor: the optical mouse works with an LED and analyses the roughness of the surface to calculate the trajectory and transmit it to the screen. With a laser mouse, a ray is used, which means that the images are clearer and the movement of the cursor much more precise. The sensor has a certain resolution, usually expressed in DPI (dot per inch). The higher the resolution, the faster and more accurate the mouse will be.
  • Weight: if your mouse is too heavy, your wrist will tire quickly during intensive use. Some models have weights, which you can remove or add in order to maximise your comfort depending on your use (office, gaming, etc.).

  • Number of buttons: the average user may be surprised at the number of buttons on a gaming mouse, as they only use three (right click, left click and scroll wheel). But for the gamer, the number of customisable buttons can make all the difference. They will usually go for a mouse with five to fifteen buttons.
  • Type of game: gamers are often careful to choose a mouse according to the style of game they enjoy playing. For example, MOBA gamers tend to choose a light and compact mouse, FPS gamers tend to choose a mouse with a sensitive sensor, and MMORPG gamers tend to choose a mouse with lots of buttons.

In terms of design, some manufacturers are quite inventive, others remain very classic. | Source: Selectos
  • Design: this is not an essential criterion, but it is better to have a mouse that you like visually if you want to keep it for a long time. In the field of gaming mouses, manufacturers are generally quite inventive, and there should be something for everyone.
