WaterWipes

With a predominantly water-based composition, these wipes are said to be the purest on the market. Simple but effective, this minimalist composition, ideal for babies, results in an odourless and very moist product. This makes them suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive. The conclusion of our tests is clear: it is difficult to find fault with them. The wipes are large, strong and remain moist for a long time.

Best budget

Mama Bear (720 wipes)

For an unbeatable price, these Mama Bear wipes are efficient to use and come in a strong and practical package. However, they are not suitable for sensitive skin.

Mama Bear Ultra Sensitive

Available at an almost unbeatable price, these wipes are the real stars of the selection. Given their somewhat more complex composition, we think they are best avoided on irritated or very sensitive skin. However, they are right for this price range: made with 99.5% natural ingredients, they are also biodegradable. Thick, soft and odourless, we found them large and moist enough to use. Their practicality is evident in the packaging, which has a rigid plastic cover that ensures the wipes stay moist for a long time.

Best high-end

Natracare Organic (50 wipes)

Thanks to their thermal spring water base and other ingredients, they are suitable for the most fragile skin types that are prone to irritation. Their format allows you to take them everywhere.

Natracare Baby Wipes

These organic cotton wipes have a natural composition (apricot, chamomile and sweet almond essential oils). Fully compostable, at first glance, they appear thin and flimsy, but they are quite the opposite. When used, we found them to be strong and with decent moisture content. On top of that, they are undeniably soft.

Mid-range alternative

Eco by Naty (672 wipes)

Made up of a majority of natural ingredients, these biodegradable wipes are hypoallergenic and therefore suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive.

Eco by Naty sans parfum

Formulated with chamomile and aloe vera extracts and soothing properties, these wipes are almost flawless. In our tests, we have found them to be effective, and the size and moisture of a single wipe are sufficient most of the time. Although they are less resistant, we did not experience any discomfort when using them. Unfortunately, while we appreciate the brand’s eco-friendly approach, which calls for biodegradable wipes and recyclable packaging, we regret the fragility of the closure system in the long run.

How did we do the tests?

To evaluate the baby wipes, we put them to the test with our 2-year-old apprentice tester (in the car seat, hands and mouth when they were multi-purpose). After evaluating the packaging of each product, and in particular, the opening system, we judged the ease (or otherwise) with which the wipes could be removed from the pack, as it is common to have to handle them with one hand during nappy changes.

In use, we looked at the size and strength of the wipes (to ensure user comfort during cleaning). On the other hand, we were of course interested in the moisture content of the wipe, which is directly related to its effectiveness in cleaning in one or two passes. Finally, we also considered the smell of the wipes. In the long term, we thought it would be interesting to check if a container had a defect in its closure system, as otherwise, the wipes could dry out.

How to choose your baby wipes?

Baby care products have been at the heart of controversy for some years. Wipes are no exception. The reason? Their composition. Several studies have pointed to the presence of products considered toxic, of which phenoxyethanol is the most decried.

Beyond that, what interests you, as a parent, is of course to use a healthy product for your child but also that it is practical to use and, ideally, not expensive.

Lingettes pour bébé

To choose the product that best suits you and your child’s needs, here is a list of criteria to consider before purchasing:

Taille des lingettes bébés testées

  • Composition: as mentioned, several ingredients that have long been present in wipes have recently come under fire. When in doubt, consider avoiding phenoxyethanol in the first place, and PEGs, phthalates, parabens and BHAs in the second. Choose hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products, and remember that the fewer the ingredients, the less likely you are to encounter a potentially toxic agent.
  • Texture: for a no-fuss experience, it’s best if the wipe is of a suitable thickness and size and, above all, strong. The point is that it should be effective enough to clean everything in one go and naturally, that you don’t get your fingers full of it. Most wipes on the market strike a balance between strength and thickness for hassle-free cleaning.

Test sur la résistance des lingettes bébé

  • Packaging: the opening system must be user-friendly. While rigid plastic flaps are extremely easy to use, especially with a single hand, and guarantee a long-term seal, they have the disadvantage of not being environmentally friendly as they are not recyclable. Other brands prefer a sticky plastic opening, either flexible or rigid, which may simply not be very airtight after a certain number of uses.
  • Biodegradability: often criticised for being disposable, wipes are now increasingly biodegradable, which is a significant plus. To achieve this, they are generally made of natural fibres, which may however be less resistant.

Other wipes we recommend

Love&Green (£12.88 / 56 wipes upon publication): biodegradable in water. With 98% natural ingredients, these wipes are fully in line with the brand’s green approach. What makes them special is that unlike all the other models tested, they are biodegradable in water and can therefore be flushed down the toilet. Unfortunately, to achieve this result, the wipe is not very resistant and is small in size. In our opinion, they should be reserved for travelling or occasional use, for example.

Lillydoo (£31.90 / 720 wipes upon publication): a very attractive mid-range alternative. These wipes have a perfect composition. In our tests, they proved to be effective: each wipe is large, moist and strong. The smell is very light and pleasant. The packaging seems to hold up over time. In short, it’s almost a no-hitter, but not enough to dethrone the WaterWipes.

Other wipes we have tested

Eau Thermale Jonzac Orgánicas (£8.96 / 40 wipes upon publication): we were not convinced by these wipes for several reasons: they are not strong, they have a strong smell and they tend to dry out quickly if the container is not tightly closed.

Huggies Natural Care (£14.39 / 560 wipes upon publication): these wipes are not very resistant to use. In addition, they have a strong smell that may bother some parents and we have mixed feelings about the closure of the container.

Pampers Aqua Pure (£34.46 / 432 wipes upon publication): in our opinion, transparency should be the key to this type of care product. However, the information on this packaging is not very legible and the closure does not look like it will last in the long term.
