Our choice, Best high-end

Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme

With three speeds including a very quiet night mode, an automatic oscillation system and a quality design, this model has all the necessary features for a top efficiency – all at a reasonable price.

Rowenta Turbo Silence Extrême+

With a classic and discreet format, as well as a modern touch provided by practical indicator lights, it has five blades for a maximum power and is of course vertically and horizontally adjustable (thanks to the automatic oscillation). During our tests, the two speeds and turbo mode proved to be more than enough to meet many needs. With its power capable of circulating no less than 45 m3/minute, the feeling of freshness is guaranteed. Lastly, we were especially seduced by the “Silent Night” mode, which is so quiet that you cannot even notice it. In short, it is impossible not to recommend it.

Best budget

Honeywell HT-900E

It is ideal for an occasional use, on the floor, on a table or even on the wall. Stable and with a 90° vertical tilt angle, it also offers 3 efficient and low noise power levels.

Honeywell HT-900E

This table fan is the perfect ally for your occasional cooling needs. Although it only offers a 90° vertical tilt and no horizontal adjustment (i.e. no automatic oscillation), it nevertheless proved to be effective during our tests, for a pleasant ventilation thanks to its three speeds and its 40W power ensuring a 12 m3/minute circulation. Its compactness is a real plus if you do not have much space at your disposal. We are also satisfied with its material quality for a basic model. In short, it is an ideal model because of its low price and its simplicity to meet basic needs.

Best mid-range

Tristar VE5930

It is a more ‘classic’ alternative ideal for small budgets. Equipped with 3 speeds and an automatic oscillation system, it is perfectly efficient and practical despite a slightly less qualitative design.

Tristar VE-5930

If you are looking for a more classic model for a very small price, this 40W model should please you. Although we were a little disappointed by the VE5930’s lesser-quality construction and materials when handling it, we have to admit that it performs perfectly when used. Equipped with three speeds and an automatic oscillation (which can be deactivated if necessary), it responds effectively to various types of needs. In short, it should be enough for consumers looking for an efficient fan without investing too much (and who do not care about the design of the chosen device).

High-end alternative

MyCarbon FS01

This fan clearly stands out thanks to its multiple features for a customisable use: multiple speeds, numerous modes, a timer, a remote control, an hyper-flexible orientation and a low noise operation

Mycarbon FS01

From a brand that seems less reliable, this little fan convinced us during our tests by its modularity and efficiency. Equipped with five settings (3 modes, 4 speeds, a timer, a horizontal and a vertical oscillation) to be adapted via the buttons located on the base or the remote control, it clearly offers many possibilities to adjust its use to your desires. In addition, it is really quiet when in use and seduces with its power, allowing 30 m3 of air to be blown per minute. You only have to determine whether all these features are really useful for your needs.

How did we do the test?

To test table fans, we first look at their design (diameter, size, material quality, etc.) and their ergonomics. We also checked their robustness and stability, as well as their ease of assembly, the simplicity of their buttons and their orientation.

We then evaluated their performance, checking that each speed was relevant, but also that their different modes were effective. Finally, we compared the noise emitted by each model.

How to choose your table fan?

The fan is still a safe bet for cooling the house in hot weather. They are cheaper to buy than air conditioners and are very practical to use, as they are often easy to install and move. Table fans, which sit on a base, are particularly attractive because of their typically more compact size and generally affordable price.

However, the choice is not necessarily easy to make when faced with the wide range of models available on the market. Here are the characteristics to pay attention to when searching for a model:

  • Dimensions: these obviously vary according to the model chosen, so the choice depends on your use and the space you have available. Many models in the ‘classic’ format have a head with a diameter of around 30 cm, but some references emphasise a more practical compactness in case of limited space. Pay particular attention to the size of the base, which can take up a lot of space on your table.
  • Oscillation: most fans have an automatic oscillation function, covering a greater or lesser range. This can be horizontal (most common) or vertical, to fine-tune the ventilated area. In most cases, a fixed use is also possible (usually via a rod system at the back of the unit).

  • Power and speed: the most common fans typically have three power levels. The more levels, the more precise the speed setting can be. But beware, the number of levels are not necessarily accurate: some models are more powerful than others at low speeds.
  • Noise level: the absolutely silent fan has not yet been invented. Some models are able to reduce the noise level to 35 dB in ‘Night’ mode. However, the higher the fan speed, the louder the fan will be (up to 60 dB). The important thing is that the ventilation noise is not interfered with (squeaking, humming or other).

  • Control panel: prefer a simple and intuitive control panel – this is often the case with table fans, which are generally easy to use. Some more modern models have a digital control panel. Beware of bright, LED-equipped models: their lighting can be surprisingly bright, and therefore annoying if you use it at night. Models with a remote control can also be very useful.
  • Modes and features: in addition to the automatic oscillation and adjustable speed functions, more and more models offer additional options. If you are forgetful or want to use your fan at night, a timer can be handy. Many fans come with a more powerful Turbo mode or a softer, quieter Night mode. The trick is to decide which is best for your needs.

  • Design: beyond the dimensions, the design of the chosen fan can influence its discreet integration – or not – in your interior. The most important thing is not to neglect the material quality, ease of maintenance or the length of the power cable. And, while the majority of references have three blades, some more powerful models offer five.

Another model we recommend

Pro Breeze (£21.99 upon publication): a compact, portable and affordable clip-on model. This small, desktop model takes up very little space and is potentially easy to carry around. Although it does not have an automatic oscillation feature, it is adjustable both vertically and horizontally. During our tests, the two speeds available were sufficient to effectively meet basic and/or occasional needs.

Other models put to the test

Rowenta VU1930F0 Classic (£63.74 upon publication): we found this model too bulky for its intended use. We have therefore decided not to include it in our main selection.

Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ (£92.98 upon publication): with its four modes, its practical interface, its automatic oscillation and above all its very low noise level, this fan totally won us over in our tests. However, we preferred the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme for its more attractive price-quality ratio and the MyCarbon FS01 for its more complete modularity. It still remains an ideal solution if you are looking for a really quiet classic fan.
