Utopia Bedding Premium EU0188

Available in various sizes, this mattress protector can cover thick mattresses with its very fine, breathable, comfortable and stretchy polyester fabric. Treated against bedbugs, dust mites and bacteria, it is suitable for allergy sufferers. But its special feature is its integral shape, which envelops the entire mattress for total protection. During our test, we were able to check that it was waterproof on all sides of the mattress. What’s more, the zip ensures a perfect fit on the mattress. However, because you have to wrap the whole mattress, it’s more difficult to put on, so we recommend 2 people to put it on. Another complaint is that the surface is slightly noisy when you move around. Apart from that, it can be put in the washing machine and tumble-dried (on a low heat setting), making it easy to care for.

Dodo Saphir

This fitted sheet model ensures a good fit on thin and thick mattresses (up to 30 cm). Made from 80% cotton and 20% anti-dust mite treated polyurethane, it is suitable for allergy sufferers and contains no substances harmful to health (Oeko-Tex Standard 100). Its 235 g/m² terry cloth fabric is highly absorbent, which is ideal if you perspire a lot. In our test, we liked its overall quality, and found that it was easy to install and held in place well when placed on the mattress. Its skirt isn’t waterproof, which means that the sides can be subject to liquid ingress, but as far as the surface is concerned, it’s definitely waterproof. What’s more, it’s easy to clean, as it can be machine-washed at 60°C and tumble-dried. Despite this, it is slightly noisy when you toss and turn in bed. Finally, it comes with a storage cover.

Budget alternative

Blumtal (160 x 200 cm)

As well as being affordable, it has a soft, warm texture that doesn’t make a sound when you move around at night. Easy to put in place, it provides a good support on the mattress.

Blumtal Protège-Matelas

Compatible with mattresses up to 30 cm thick, this fitted sheet is made from polyester. Its surface has a quilted effect, making it soft, warm, comfortable and fairly silent when you move. It is also waterproof, but not its skirt. So only the main surface is protected, not the sides of the mattress. And even though we found the skirt a little fragile, the elasticity of the corners made it easy to put on, and it didn’t slide around on the mattress.  What’s more, thanks to the anti-mite treatment, it’s recommended for allergy sufferers. In terms of care, it’s machine washable at up to 40°C and can be tumble dried (on low heat), but if you don’t have a tumble dryer, it dries just as quickly in the open air. However, it is a little less suitable if you tend to sweat during the night, as it is less absorbent.

How did we test?

Firstly, we placed each model on thick and thin mattresses to see how easy they were to fit, how well they fitted and how well they held the mattress. Then we assessed the quality of the design, as well as the breathability, elasticity and softness of the material. Naturally, we also paid particular attention to the various treatments (dust mites, mould, bacteria, allergens, etc.).

We then moved on to the waterproofing test by pouring water over the entire mattress protector, including the sides. We also moved around to see if the material made any noise. Finally, we tested its ease of care by checking that it could be put in the washing machine and possibly the tumble dryer.

How do you choose your mattress protector?

Like mattresses, mattress toppers and pillows, mattress protectors (or undersheets) are bedding items that can have a major influence on the quality of your sleep and, consequently, on your mood.

Protège-matelas

In practical terms, their role is to extend the life of your mattress and, in some cases, to provide protection against bacteria and dust mites of all kinds.

Their effectiveness is beyond question, so it’s not surprising that there are so many models on the market today.

To help you make the best choice, we’ve listed a few features to consider before you buy.

Protège-matelas

First of all, mattress protectors come in 3 forms:

  • The tray shape: a tray-shaped mattress protector is a sheet with 4 elastic bands to help hold it in place.
  • Fitted sheet: this is probably the most common format. Unlike the “tray” type, it has elasticated cups that need to be fitted to the corners of the mattress, just like a real bed cover.

Protège-matelas

  • Integral: this option is generally used to renovate a stained mattress. It covers the entire sleeping surface (both sides) and closes with a zip.

Once you’ve identified which of these formats is most likely to meet your needs, you’ll then need to look at :

  • Dimensions: for the sheet to do its job, you need to make sure that its size matches that of your sleeping surface perfectly. What’s more, if you opt for a fitted sheet or fitted sheet, pay particular attention to the height of the elastics and cups, which should be greater than or equal to the thickness of the mattress.

Protège-matelas

  • Weight: if you’re the type of person who perspires a lot during the night, it’s essential to consider the weight (see weight per square metre), as the higher the weight, the more absorbent the material used.
  • The material: while fleece provides softness and warmth, terrycloth – generally made from cotton and polyester – is soft and breathable. Jersey cotton or polycotton is known for its flexibility, elasticity and lightness. Note that some mattress protectors are waterproof and can therefore be made up of a layer of PVC, polyurethane or latex.

  • Maintenance: as we said in our article on the best bath towels, ease of maintenance is not something to be taken lightly, as you’ll be using your mattress protector on a daily basis. While most of them are machine-washable, not all of them can be tumble-dried: it’s up to you to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully.

Other recommended mattress protectors

Amazon Brand Umi Mattress Protector: An inexpensive absorbent alternative made from towelling material. With its good dimensions, it fits most mattresses, even the thickest. Made from 80% cotton and 20% polyester and certified free from harmful substances (Oeko-Tex, Standard 100), its towelling fabric is breathable and absorbs perspiration and liquids well. It also provides effective protection against liquids, but we regret that the sides are not as well protected because of the skirt’s lack of waterproofing. In terms of treatment, this hypoallergenic model is treated against mould and dust mites. Thanks to its 4 elasticated corners, the fitted sheet is easy to put on and fits snugly against the mattress. Finally, it’s easy to care for, as it can be machine-washed at 60°C and tumble-dried at low temperature. However, during our test, we didn’t find it as soft as users online.

Dreamzie Mattress Cover: Perfectly treated and easy to clean. Available in every possible size, this fitted sheet is easy to put on and hugs as many mattresses as possible with its stretch sides. Made from cotton and polyester without harmful chemicals, its terry cloth material is effective against sweat and the mattress surface is protected by its waterproof membrane. What’s more, its Bi-Ome technology offers total protection against dust mites, bacteria, mould, pollen and other parasites, making it ideal for allergy sufferers. It’s also easy to care for, as it can be machine-washed (up to 60°C) and tumble-dried (on low heat). However, during our test, we noticed that the seams were fraying and the skirt seemed rather fragile and not waterproof. As a result, the sides of the mattress are not well protected.

Other mattress protectors tested

Utopia Bedding Mattress Protector EU0097: This quilted model is quiet, soft, comfortable and inexpensive. However, there was a bad smell when we unpacked it, and in the absence of treatment, it’s not suitable for allergy sufferers. What’s more, the seams tend to fray.

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Mattress Protector EU0276: This tray-shaped mattress protector has an absorbent terry surface, but it doesn’t benefit from any pest treatment. What’s more, it doesn’t hold the mattress up to scratch.

Sweet Home Waterproof Mattress Cover: Its terry cloth fabric is breathable and absorbs liquids well, without letting them pass through its waterproof membrane. Treated against dust mites, bacteria and mould, it is suitable for allergy sufferers. Despite this, it is a little noisy when shaken.

Sweet Night Jersey Waterproof Mattress Protector: This thin jersey model fits and cleans very easily. However, it is noisier when tossed around and the lack of parasite treatment is detrimental to allergy sufferers. Its skirt also seems a little more fragile to us.

ZenPur: Fully treated against bacteria, dust mites and mould, this terrycloth fitted sheet is manufactured to the highest standards. It absorbs sweat and urine well and is easy to clean. However, its skirt is fragile and not waterproof, leaving the sides of the bed unprotected, and there were a few more creases than with the others.

LinenSpa Mattress Protector: Its thin, smooth, hypoallergenic, anti-mite and anti-allergenic fabric fits the mattress well and is easy to care for. However, we found its skirt and seams more fragile. What’s more, it’s quite noisy when you toss and turn.

Dodo Cozy: Suitable for thick mattresses (up to 30 cm), its terry cloth material is absorbent. Despite this, its seams are fragile and it has not been treated against parasites.
