Honorable mentions

Braun Minipimer 5200 (£41.59 upon publication): a great value at an affordable price. With a power of 1000 W and 21 speeds, this model stood out during our tests for its efficiency on various types of food and its splash-proof design. Except for its ‘EasyClick’ system (to remove the blender foot) which is slightly more difficult than others, we did not find any drawbacks when using it. Note that this version only comes with a 600 ml measuring cup. Other more complete packs are available, however, but at a higher price.

Smeg HBF02PBEU (£215,34 upon publication): style is everything. With 700W of power, this appliance is a great choice for fans of the brand’s retro-style appliances. It includes a bowl, chopper, wire whisk and potato masher. All of the attachments, including the main blender foot, are effective and the whisk in particular seemed to us to be a little more effective than the Arendo and Moulinex models mentioned above. While we preferred the Braun MultiQuick 7 in its price range for its accessories and ActiveBlade technology (which moves the blades), it is still an excellent choice. It is up to you to decide which accessories suit you the best.

Bamix MX102345 (£135,84 upon publication): 1 mixer, 3 mixing heads. This model has an AC motor with a power of 180 W. Thanks to its various blades, it can prepare delicious recipes, from starters to desserts. Its accessories (three attachments, a cup and a wall storage stand) and its speed make it an ideal companion in the kitchen. It is the only one we tested that works with a system of discs that can be positioned directly on the blender base (which saves space in the kitchen). The investment is however much more substantial.

How to choose your hand blender?

With the multitude of products on the market and the variety of their uses (as a complement to a blender or as a substitute, as a simple mixer or as a multifunctional appliance), it is sometimes difficult to choose the right hand blender that suits your needs.

Here are some points to consider before buying:

  • The type of hand blender: while the most affordable “classic” model is mainly intended for preparing liquids (soups, sauces, even purees), there are “multifunction” models, sold with a range of accessories. From choppers to whiskers to ice crushers, they allow you to make a multitude of different recipes.
  • Materials: plastic, stainless steel or a combination of the two are generally available. Stainless steel models are more expensive, but have the advantage of being more durable and easier to maintain.

  • Power: expressed in watts (W), it should ideally be between 500 and 700 W, in order to be able to process both liquids and more solid foods. Some high-end models are nevertheless very efficient despite the number of watts indicated (AC motor).
  • Speed: preferably, it should be adjustable according to the type of food being processed. Some models even have preset settings according to the preparation chosen.

  • Supplied accessories: multifunctional hand blenders can be fitted with many accessories (chopper, whisk, potato masher, etc.). So look at which ones are included and which ones can be bought as extras, and at what price. Lastly, check whether these are easy and safe to set up.
  • Maintenance: this depends on both the material of the blender (stainless steel is easier to clean than plastic) and the shape of the base (some have multiple small recesses where the ingredients can be stuck). Also check whether the supplied accessories are dishwasher safe, which can save you precious time.
