The Best Hair Straightening Brush

Posted on 18 May 2022

After spending almost 15 hours comparing and testing 6 models, we have determined that the GHD Rise is currently the best performing hair straightening brush on the market.

This comparison is certified 100% impartial and follows our selection process.

Our choice, Best high-end

GHD Rise

This model manages to justify its high price thanks to the quality of its performance. Indeed, it is the only one in this selection to have really seduced us with its innovative design and its consistent efficiency.

This is not the most affordable straightening brush on the market, but it is the most functional of all. Designed to add volume from root to tip, it blew us away with its great performance. The GHD Rise benefits from a distinctive round format, as well as the ultra-zone predictive technology: two features that allowed us to create a blow-dry effect worthy of the best hair salons, without damaging our hair!

Best budget

Philips StyleCare Essential

During our tests, this Philips device showed us that low price can also rhyme with high efficiency, as we actually benefited from performances that, at first sight, would be more similar to a high-end model.

Although we started our tests with a few preconceptions, especially because this is the most affordable brush in our comparison, we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was no less powerful. With two temperature settings, it also has an ultra-wide brushing zone which, while not suitable for everyone, allowed us to straighten large sections of hair. In short, it saved us a lot of time!

Best mid-range

Remington Keratin Protect

This model is both a styling tool and a care accessory. It is the only one in this selection to have a ceramic coating, impregnated with keratin and almond oil.

We had high expectations of this straightening brush. Unique in its design, it stands out from its rivals thanks to its large picks and its ceramic coating, infused with keratin and almond oil. So, obviously, we wanted to see for ourselves if the promises of shine and vitality announced by the brand were kept. And the least we can say is that we were not disappointed, as our hair was indeed smooth, soft, voluminous and shiny.

Honorable mentions

Calor Power Straight CF5820C0 (£64,29 upon publication): a very good model, but less suitable for frizzy and curly hair. On paper, this straightening brush has everything to please, namely a ceramic coating, three temperature levels and Thermo Control technology, for an effective heat distribution. Unfortunately, in our tests we found that while it was originally designed for frizzy and curly hair, it is not actually the most effective way to treat these hair types.

How to choose your hair straightening brush?

Primarily intended for curly hair, straightening brushes are often touted as a miracle solution, for a smooth finish worthy of the finest professional blow-dries.

However, to be able to enjoy this almost exceptional result, you need to find a model that is both qualitative and adapted to your hair type. This is not always easy given the multitude of models on the market.

So, to help you to make the choice that will most likely meet your needs, we have listed a few criteria to consider.

First of all, let’s remember that there are different types of electric brushes today, whose respective uses and objectives should not be confused:

  • The blowing brush: this is more like a hair dryer. It can be used on wet hair and dries them while styling them. In other words, it is an ideal solution for those who have difficulty juggling a hair dryer in one hand and a classic brush in the other.
  • The straightening and heating brush: this is the model we are dealing with today. Designed to tame unruly manes, it is used on dry hair: it is therefore a styling tool, not a hair dryer. Particularly designed for curly, wavy and frizzy hair, it also appeals to some users with straighter hair because of its clean blow-dry effect.
  • What’s the difference with a straightener?: while a hair straightener gives you a fairly flat look by enclosing your hair strands between two plates, a straightening brush allows you to keep your natural volume. So keep in mind that the results are not exactly the same. In fact, some users use the two devices in a complementary way, using the brush for quick touch-ups – its use is usually a time-saver compared to the straightener.

Now that you know what you are getting into when you buy a hair straightening brush, here are a few things you should look out for to make sure you are choosing a quality model:

  • How to use: In order to ensure an ideal result and to make your work easier, it is recommended to detangle your hair before using the straightening brush. Depending on your hair type, you may need to go over the same strand several times to get it completely straight. Finally, as with any heat diffuser, be sure to protect your hair with a heat protection spray.

  • Technology: most models have an ionic function that releases negative ions to reduce frizz, prevent static and add shine to the hair. In addition, some brushes also feature temperature control technology, which ensures that the heat is evenly distributed to avoid damaging the hair.
  • Materials: most devices consist of a ceramic plate and heating picks, which ensure an even distribution of heat. In some cases, tourmaline can also be found, which is generally known for taming frizz.
  • Features: some features are likely to ease the use of the brush, such as the temperature settings, to be adapted according to your hair type (the thiner the hair, the lower the temperature should be). The standby and automatic switch-off functions are also important, if only for the “safety” aspect.
  • Ergonomics: if you can, always go for a long, rotating power cord so that you can enjoy freedom of movement. Similarly, look for a brush that gives you the option of locking the control knobs, so that you do not accidentally turn off or change the temperature.
