In our opinion, this model has an optimal internal and external organisation: you have everything you need to organise your sports bag by separating clean and dirty clothes and shoes. During our tests, we found that the seams and fastenings are strong, and it has a strap and a padded handle where you can write your name. The bottom is not totally hard but it´s more practical with the bottom pocket. Moreover, the fabric and seams are waterproof, and the 100% sporty design is perfect!

Although not the most convenient, it has serious selling points, starting with its affordable price, low empty volume and simple but optimal storage.
Very compact and ultra-lightweight, this polyester bag has a water-repellent structure. On each side of the bag, there is a ventilation hole. Despite the somewhat simplistic organisation, you can easily separate clean things from shoes or dirty clothes, and even store other belongings in the front pocket. However, when we tested it, the bottom of the bag lacked padding, which prevented it from standing upright when full. It was also not the most comfortable to carry, either in the hand or over the shoulder. Finally, it has no feet to prevent friction with the ground, which may affect its long-term durability.

It is sport-oriented and has an optimal arrangement so that you only have to put your things in it. In addition, it is easy to fold up and the comfortable handles make it easier to hold.
Quite spacious and well organised, this bag has a specific, airy pocket for your shoes and several other pockets for keys or a water bottle. The bottom is padded and despite the thinness of the fabric, it is solid and waterproof, even at the seams. In total, there are two handles and a comfortable strap. During our tests, we particularly liked the strap that holds it in place when folded. Available in a variety of colours, it has a sporty and convincing appearance.
Adidas Defender 4
Its durable and solid design allows the most well-equipped athletes to wear it as often as they want. The reinforced fabric is robust and resistant to any environment.
This good-sized sports bag has a comfortable handle and shoulder strap. Available in a range of sizes and colours, it is made from durable, waterproof fabric. The main compartment is very spacious and stands upright, making it easy to store. There is a useful exterior zipped pocket for storing small items and two exterior side pockets, making this bag a practical choice that will accompany you to your sports club or gym for many years to come.

How did we do the tests?
To measure the capacity and practicality of the interior organisation and pockets, we have separated everything that an athlete should carry in their bag (sports shoes, change of clothes, towel, underwear, water bottle, but also car keys, smartphone, wallet, etc.). We also judge the quality of the fasteners and zips.
To test their resistance, we loaded them several times with heavy utensils (dumbbells, water bottles, etc.) to assess the strength of the seams. We then poured water over each fabric to test its waterproofing. Finally, we tested the comfort of the straps and handles by carrying them in different conditions, taking into account their weight and volume.
How to choose your gym bag?
Every good sportsman must have a bag in which to put his things, but a good bag is not chosen any old way.
Here are some criteria to consider to help you make your choice among all the gym bags available:
- Capacity: as always with a bag, capacity is measured by volume. If the manufacturer does not indicate this, you can determine it by a quick calculation: length x width x height. The choice depends, logically, on your sporting activity and the equipment you need to carry.
- Type of bag: while the shoulder bag is suitable for most indoor sports and the pool, the backpack has the advantage of distributing the load well. The latter is the most practical if you are travelling to training by public transport. However, you should carefully consider its dimensions so that its width does not exceed your back. Lastly, a wheeled bag is ideal for carrying heavy and bulky equipment.
- Materials and finishes: among the materials, polyester is the most widespread because it is very strong. Nylon is another safe bet. The bag must be waterproof, or at least weatherproof. To make your choice, look at five key points: the quality of the zippers, the strength of the seams and the fastenings on the shoulder straps, the abrasion-proof panels, and good ventilation, which will limit the risk of moisture and bad odours.
- Compartments: it should have at least two compartments, to allow you to isolate dirty and/or wet laundry, especially if you are training outdoors. A pocket for shoes is also welcome. For backpacks, we prefer the side mesh pocket for the water bottle to save space. More and more models offer additional storage for valuables.
- Versatility: if you do not want to carry many bags, choose a versatile model. Manufacturers are making more and more efforts in this direction. Most compact gym bags, for example, meet the standards set by airlines for travel in the cabin. A backpack model will accompany you on a short hike or to work.
- Style: the aesthetic aspect is important. Whether it is worn on your back or your arm, it goes with your clothing style. If you want to use the bag for something other than training, go for a more sober look, and if you want something more flashy and recognisable, go for it.
- Maintenance: this type of equipment is generally not compatible with the washing machine and tumble dryer. It can be cleaned with a sponge and a little soapy water. Daily, make sure that the interior is always dry. If the bag is wet, leave it open to air dry, away from any heat source.

Puma TeamFINAL 21 (£46.28 upon publication): a commitment to resistance. The quality of its finish is impeccable, especially thanks to its sturdy base. In addition, it has everything you need in terms of practicality. This fitness bag has a large main compartment, two outside pockets and a mesh, and a very small inside pocket. The stitching and zips are sturdy and there is a padded shoulder strap and carry handle. The five feet under the hard bottom prevent friction with the ground and therefore ensure greater durability. Finally, the fabric is waterproof, but the seams showed their limits during our tests, which explains its position as an alternative.
Under Armour Contain Duo (£51.90 upon publication): can be used as a backpack or shoulder bag. Tough, durable and waterproof, it has a water-repellent finish and its back panel is padded with breathable mesh. The large compartment prevents odours and has several handy pockets for water bottles, valuables, dirty clothes, shoes and even a laptop. Thanks to its large space and great organisation, it is useful for sports that require more equipment (such as boxing, for example). In addition, the strap is removable.
Adidas Defender III (£113.00 upon publication): solid and resistant. Its reinforced fabric is tear-proof, according to the manufacturer. As useful for sports as it is for school or travel, this model is equipped with a comfortable handle and shoulder strap. Available in several sizes and colours, it is made of reinforced ripstop fabric. The main compartment is very spacious and stands upright, making it easy to store. Compared to its second version, there is a new external zipped pocket for storing small items as well as additional side pockets.
Other models we have tested
AmazonBasics 98 L (£19.39 upon publication): It can hold up to 98 litres. There is also a small inner pocket and six outer pockets. Thanks to its soft, thin fabric and the absence of a rigid bottom, it is light and folds easily. The sides are water resistant but the seams are not. We also deplore its simplistic look which lacks character. In our opinion, it is more suitable for storing things or for travelling.
Puma Challenger M (£29.95 upon publication): Its seams and fastenings are durable despite a heavy load. There is a large interior compartment, two exterior pockets and a mesh pocket. We found it light and space-saving, but with no padding on the handle and strap, it lacks comfort when worn. Also, the fabric is thin so it may leak a few drops in heavy rain. Its small size is ideal for going to the gym.
