Beurer FC45

This rotating face brush has a waterproof design, making it suitable for a use in the shower. Our tests have shown that it is easy and intuitive to use, enhanced by a choice between two speeds and an automatic shut-off. The brush comes with a soft bristle head, which is gentle on sensitive skin. It is battery operated, which is a little less convenient. For tighter budgets or a more occasional use, it does the job perfectly – and really impresses with its price-quality ratio.

How did we test?

Firstly, we paid particular attention to the ergonomics (easy, intuitive, practical and comfortable to use) and design (quality of manufacture, softness of the brushes on the skin) of the various facial cleansing brushes. We also checked the practicality of their operation in terms of charging and operating time (batteries supplied and easy to install, practical charger or charging base, charging status indicator).

In addition, we handled the various accessories supplied with the brushes. In particular, we observed that, in most cases, the presence of a protective cover for the head was useful, but not very practical. Finally, while it is clear that we evaluated them in the moment, it is important to remember that we have no data on their long-term effectiveness.

How to choose your facial cleansing brush?

Like micellar lotions, scrubs and konjac sponges, facial cleansing brushes have become very popular. Designed to be used with your favourite cleanser, they unclog pores and remove impurities such as make-up residue, dead cells and excess sebum.

They are particularly appealing to men and women with oily and/or acne-prone skin – but are sometimes considered a little too irritating on very sensitive skin. In practice, you need to moisten your face and the brush head, before applying your usual cleanser to either and proceeding to clean.

After rinsing your face, it is advised to apply your moisturiser to soothe your skin, or even to do your weekly mask. Deep cleansing also allows your skin care products to penetrate better.

Brushes come in the form of manual devices – which are self-explanatory – or electric devices, characterised by various kinds of technology:

  • Rotating brushes: rotating in one direction and then possibly the other, these models act on impurities in depth, while stimulating the epidermis. This type of cleansing is particularly effective if the skin is already well cleansed beforehand. This is the most basic and commonly used system.
  • Vibrating brushes: here, the brush attacks superficial impurities such as dead cells and make-up (although prior make-up removal is still recommended). In addition, the vibrations stimulate the blood circulation and fight against excess sebum. Note that many brushes combine rotation and vibration for a complete and optimal cleansing.
  • Micro-oscillation brushes: a rarer technology that acts as an exfoliator and improves skin oxygenation while stimulating the epidermis. Its results are a little more like the effects of facial scrubbing than cleansing – although the two are of course closely related.
  • Pulsating brushes: combining different forms of vibration, this system combines all the advantages of vibrating brushes while acting on the elasticity of the epidermis. This makes it a popular technology for preventing skin ageing. Do not hesitate to combine its use with an anti-wrinkle cream for optimal results…

Beurer Pureo Deep Cleansing FC 95

Once you have decided on the model that suits your desires, we invite you to look at the quality of the brush itself. The main points to look out for are the following:

  • Heads: in addition to the cleansing heads, you can find massage brushes, exfoliating brushes, specific brushes for sensitive skin and anti-wrinkle brushes. The most important thing is of course to choose a head and a use (more or less frequent) adapted to your skin type, so that the cleansing is not too aggressive. Most brands recommend changing the head every three months (but this also depends on how often you use it).
  • Waterproofness: for a convenient use in the shower or bath, you need to ensure that the model you choose is waterproof. This also makes it easier to wash the device – especially as the brush needs to be cleaned after each use to prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Speeds: to provide the right cleansing for your skin and your needs, it is best to choose a brush with different speeds. If you are a beginner, it is best to start with the lowest speed and see how your skin reacts.

  • Timer: many models have a timer that tells you when it is time to change the area of the face to be cleaned by beeping, pausing or vibrating. Brushes often run in 20-second cycles, for a total of one minute. In most cases, the brushes will then stop automatically.
  • Power supply: brushes can be battery-powered or rechargeable, cordless or mains-powered only. To use it easily, we advise you to choose a cordless rechargeable model, which will also be less wasteful than a battery-operated model. In this case, remember to check its battery life. Usually, it is around 30 minutes.
  • Ergonomics: to make using your brush as pleasant as possible, it is best to choose a model that is easy to handle and light. And if you have the opportunity, do not hesitate to take it in hand to see for yourself how comfortable it is.

Other facial cleansing brush we recommend

Beurer Pureo Deep Cleansing FC 95 (£39.99 upon publication): a more advanced version of our entry-level model. The FC 95 works with single or oscillating circular movements and can be set to three speeds. Waterproof and equipped with a timer, it includes no less than four different heads in its accessories to meet all needs. Note that in our tests it proved to be quite intense, even on the first speed. If you are looking for an ultra-equipped and feature-rich machine, it may be an option to consider as an alternative to ‘Our Choice.’

Other facial cleansing brushes we tested

Nivea Pure Skin : no longer manufactured

Etereauty 7-in-1 (£28.51 upon publication) : During our tests, we were moderately impressed with this model, which struggles to score points for its design, quality of materials and ease of handling.
